Lunching in NY Soho: Galli Restaurant

It was almost like a scene from Serendipity. Well, minus the love story. It was just a glorious snowy day in February. The air was crisp and I just scored a pair of MiH and Citizens of Humanity jeans at 70 % off, so yeah, it already was a good day.

Living most of the year in the Middle East, struggling to walk the slippery streets while wrestling with my umbrella and gusts of wind, was in my dictionary, FUN.

I was hungry and was already running late to meet a friend for her lunch break Uptown, so  I decided to just randomly pick a restaurant, and I saw Galli. It was around 1:30 in the afternoon, the crowd has gone, so it was quiet and just lovely. It was a pleasant discovery.

I had the Spinach salad with honey glazed pecans, crumbled gorgonzola, carrots and balsamic vinaigrette for my starter with a glass of Pinot Grigio.

For my main course, the server suggested the Lemon Sole fillet and it did not disappoint.

It was warm and light and it was just what I needed.

I ended my wonderful solo lunch with this homemade Tiramisu and a shot of espresso and lingered for a few more minutes before braving the cold. They were playing Bob Marley after all. Reggae in the winter. You just can’t beat that.

I fell in love with this joint. It’s a cozy, unpretentious place for the relaxed and hungry anti-froufrou crowd. It’s good, Italian comfort food, with kind people (read: They were attentive and genuinely happy to have you there). Plus, they let me go around taking pictures.

I can’t wait to come back.

Galli Restaurant is on 45 Mercer Street in SoHo, New York City.

New York Quick Lunch: Fred’s at Barneys

One of my purely joyful and guilty pleasures in life: Eating and shopping alone.

No fake texting and book-flip reading involved in this. Please, if you do that, stop.

Own your space, relish your food and frolic in the sights and sounds around you.

Participate in life. There’s nothing better.

I get to enjoy that in Europe, but for some odd reason, New york seems to be the only place in America where that solitary revelry is warranted.

For that and many other reasons, I heart New York.

A couple of glasses of Pinot Grigio and Baltimore Crab cakes with beet, romaine and onion slaw, remoulade sauce and belgian pommes frites for a quick lunch before shopping.

Seating for one, and yes, I’d like to sit at the bar.

Now, I’m ready to go to the shoe department and take on the world.

*apologies for the uneventful photos, I heard NY restaurants don’t like food photographers anymore. I’m almost always ready to fake a Japanese accent, just in case I get caught.

Fred’s is perfectly situated at the 9th floor of Barneys at 660 Madison Avenue.

The food’s great and the atmosphere is relaxed-trendy. A long line forms around lunch, but for solo-riders, you’re pretty much guaranteed a seat.

My New York Italian lunch

My Italian feast all the way from New York to the Middle East!

I can’t describe them to you. I have no words, just happiness…

Parmigiana di Melanzane.                                                                                               Baked eggplant with layers of mozzarella in a tomato and basil sauce.

Linguine all’ Aragosta.                                                                                                    Linguini with fresh Omani lobster and cherry tomatoes in lobster bisque.

Tiramisu’ della Bice. Classic Italian tiramisu.

Almost like a dream, I’m in 54th Street in New York stuffing my face with pasta at Bice.

Minus the long-ass flight. I’m glad they made it all the way here.
